STANDARD 8:

Governance

The governing body is so constituted, with regard to membership and forms of organization, as to assist the school with sound strategic planning and with direction and support in achieving the mission of the school.

Effective Practice 8.1

The school’s governing body exercises fiduciary responsibility, provides support for realizing the school’s mission, and gives assurance of the long-term viability of the school.

Effective Practice 8.2

The school has a governing body of appropriate size, structure and composition to make policy, to hold the school in trust, and to monitor the institutional activity and programs.

Effective Practice 8.3

The governing body ensures that resources are in place adequate to support the realization of the school’s strategic plan.

Effective Practice 8.4

The members of the governing body have sufficient independence from individuals, groups, or entities so as to ensure the board’s ability to fulfil its mission and control      its own destiny.

Effective Practice 8.5

The governing body acts at arm's length from the administration of the school. To this end, there is a clear understanding of the respective functions of the governing body and the school administration, and in this connection, new Board members are appropriately briefed.

Effective Practice 8.6

The governing body has a current strategic plan, which is regularly reviewed and modified, and is supported by the school’s long-range financial plan.

Effective Practice 8.7

The governing body has developed an effective working partnership with the Head of School. The performance of the Head of the school is evaluated on a regular basis by the governing body through a practised and understood procedure. The results of this evaluation are documented.           

Effective Practice 8.8

Communication of board decisions to the school community is appropriate and timely.

Effective Practice 8.9

The governing body has a written policy relating to conflict of interest, especially in academic, admissions, business and disciplinary matters.

Effective Practice 8.10

The governing body regularly evaluates its effectiveness.
